Our BIGGBY Learn the Game program is for ages 8-14 and provides players new to hockey an opportunity to play on a team of their own while they learn the rules of the game, positions of play and full ice concepts before moving to our full-season House or Ravens Tier 3 program.

Our focus is growing the game and making hockey a memorable experience for the kids while building the next generation of youth coaches and players and keeping the sport affordable for our families.  Utilizing the USA Hockey ADM structure allows for skill appropriate play, which maximizes puck touches, ice time and FUN!

Our hockey family grows stronger and larger each season and we hope you will join us as we create lifelong friendships at the rink!

Players must be able to skate unassisted & stop in a controlled manner before registering for this program.  Full hockey equipment is required.

2024 -2025 BIGGBY Learn the Game
This program is for players who are 8 years old and older (this year it is those born 2016 and earlier) to have a team of their own and learn the rules of the game with an opportunity to play in scrimmages to increase their comfort level and better prepare them to move to our full-ice house program, which is a 30+ game season that involves league and district play.
All players coming out of Learn to Play will be required to participate in our Learn the Game program before moving to a full season team.  Additionally, any players scoring 1.5 or lower in our house evaluation skates will be placed in our Learn the Game program for further development before moving to a full season team.
Holiday Hockey School (17)
Full hockey equipment is required to participate - hockey skates, shin guards, padded pants, chest/shoulder pads, elbow pads, hockey gloves, a hockey helmet with a full cage, and a neck guard (mouth guards are not required until 12u or older).
One of the best ways for kids to start playing is to borrow equipment from a sibling, neighbor, friend, or relative, it helps parents save money until they have to start buying new gear and it helps clear out someone else's storage space!!

Players must be a registered member of USA Hockey for the current season prior to registering for this program

ADDITIONALLY - IF YOUR CHILD HAS NEVER PARTICIPATED IN A USA HOCKEY PROGRAM BEFORE, A COPY OF YOUR CHILD'S BIRTH CERTIFICATE IS NEEDED - YOU CAN DOWNLOAD DURING REGISTRATION OR EMAIL IT TO OFFICE@KVHOCKEY.ORG

Sessions are limited to 26 players total, two teams of 13 players each to maximize game shifts and allow for more individual coaching.

For the initial start of the program the rest of the 2024-2025 season, this will be a once per week skate that will differ from our Learn to Play Hockey program, focusing more on full ice concepts, positioning, and different skating, passing and shooting drills. We will also incorporate goalie and encourage players to try out the position, we will provide leg pads, a catching glove, blocker and a stick (players wear their own helmet and use player skates in the beginning).

For the 2025-2026 Season, our BIGGBY Learn the Game program will begin in mid-September and go through Mid-March.  The teams will practice one to two times per week and will also have scrimmage games against other teams with similar skill level.   It will be approximately 25 practices and 16 games with limited local travel.   Players will receive a sublimated jersey and socks for the full season.   Cost will be approximately $500.

Players will be able to join this program any time from our Learn to Play or a similar program.

WHY HOCKEY?

IT'S MORE THAN A GAME
Hockey develops life skills that build a foundation for a child's confidence, pride, focus and responsibility.

LIFE-LONG FRIENDSHIPS
Starting with the bonds created in the locker room to the relationships formed on the ice, hockey creates friendships that last a lifetime.

SET UP FOR SUCCESS
Hockey's unique structure ensures that your child learns to love the game while promoting a healthy lifestyle, social wellness and mental well-being.

HOCKEY IS FUN
The encouraging environment hockey provides helps kids grow as both hockey players and people.

LEARN THE GAME COACHES

Our programs are 99% volunteer based and are only a success because of the outstanding efforts of our volunteer coaches.
We are always looking for help on the ice for this program and will need two head coaches to serve as the lead for all things related to the team.  Our Learn to Play Director will ensure the overall program is organized with plans for every session but the more coaches we have, the more that can be accomplished and the better support the players will receive.

Our Learn the Game coaches must comply with the USA Hockey coaching requirements.
If you wish to assist, please send your USA Hockey # to office@kvhockey.org
